Dr. Ouida Y. Powe is a seasoned educational leader with over twenty years of experience in educational leadership, student development, counseling, and enrollment management. She is currently in her second year as Assistant Principal at the Community Lab School within Albemarle County Public Schools, after previously serving as the Director of School Counseling at the same institution. Throughout her career, Dr. Powe has consistently pursued opportunities to collaborate with faculty, student support services, and community-based organizations to enhance student success. Her dedication to this mission led to a partnership with the school's librarian, resulting in the co-authorship of an article on using bibliotherapy to meet the diverse needs of their students.
Her commitment to building a network to serve students is also reflected in her role as the Founding Director of The Jacksonville Commitment, a citywide college access initiative in Jacksonville, Florida. This program, a partnership involving the City of Jacksonville, the school district, and four post-secondary institutions, has successfully prepared numerous students for college entry, success, and graduation. Her leadership in this initiative earned her recognition, including the Presidential Excellence Award presented by the University of North Florida.
Academically, Dr. Powe holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of North Florida, an Ed.S. and M.A. in Counselor Education from the University of Florida, and a B.A. in Exceptional Education from the University of Florida.
In addition to her professional endeavors, Dr. Powe has been actively involved in community service and professional organizations. She served on the boards of Pleasant Place, Inc., and The Dignity Project, advocating for teen mothers and young men from financially challenged backgrounds, respectively. She has also been a member of the National College Access Network, the Florida Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, the Gainesville and Charlottesville Chapters of the NAACP, and Black Women of Central Virginia.
Driven by a passion for wellness and equity in education, Dr. Powe continues to dedicate her career to creating opportunities and removing barriers for all students, ensuring they have the tools and support they need to achieve their full potential.
